Start a New Game

One of the new features coming in U3 patch 3.3 is the addition of a “Start a New Game” option. This option is added directly to the in-game main menu, and will reset your party, register, and all saved progress on the sosaria map (which included monsters, ships, moon state, and whirlpool location).

The reason why this is even a thing in Ultima’s 2 and 3 is that these early 1980’s games were designed to save your game state to “player” floppy disks. When you wanted to start a new game, you simply used a clean player disk.

The U3 Upgrades had previously allowed you to reset your saved game by providing a “u3reset” program that you could run via the command line. However, depending on how it was launched, the process could get pretty extensive.

  1. Run u3reset
  2. Get message that party had to be dispersed
  3. Launch Ultima 3
  4. Disperse party
  5. Quit
  6. Run u3reset again
  7. Launch Ultima 3 again
  8. Form your party
  9. Journey onward

While I had provided multiple binaries for u3reset in patch v3.1 so that it could run on Windows, DOS, or Linux, I felt it still could be made simpler to use. Also, with modding being a thing in 3.3, I didn’t have a great way to maintain this logic in u3reset. The result is a much simpler process. Now, all you need to do is:

  1. Launch Ultima 3
  2. Start a New Game
  3. Confirm that you really want to start over
  4. Form your party
  5. Journey Onward

The “u3reset” binaries will be removed from future releases of the U3 Upgrade.

  1. IM having issues trying to use the ultima 2 upgrade patch. I looked over it and there is none of the files listed that should help with the upgrade
