With the fall of the unholy Mondain, all of Earth rejoiced. The immortal sorcerer that held the world in his iron grip was finally defeated, and the people of Earth could live without fear for the first time in one thousand years. Kingdoms that had been locked in deadly conflict only days before were finally at peace. Men that were brutal enemies their entire lives came to terms with one another. To their disbelief, the people of Earth realized how centuries of war and malice were suddenly at an end; and they deceived themselves into believing that the worst was behind them.
One of the most magnificent results of Mondain's fall were the Time Doors, shimmering gates of silvery-blue light that would take a man forward or back in time by centuries, or even millennia. Some believed it was a side effect of Mondain's dabbling in time travel. Others told the tale of how Mondain's death was the cause of a traumatic upheaval in the ethereal plane, and the gates were the result. But the truth wandered into town one day, and the people of Earth did not want to believe what it implied. It was an orc, and beasts such as these had not been seen since the time of Mondain. It had been rumored that Mondain had an apprentice, but the notion had been rejected more out of fear than anything else. And when Earth was ready to accept this truth, it was far too late.

Orcs, daemons and balrons flooded the world in a savage frenzy that ended only in blood. The people were reminded of the time of Mondain, a time they did not want to look back on again... but she made them remember. An unnatural hatred for one another, fueled by her enchantments pitted neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother, and nation against nation, until the totality of man's destruction came to fruition in the Holocaust of 2111. Were it not for the Time Doors, none would have survived. And fortunately, thanks to the reports of the survivors of this Holocaust, the people of Earth now had a name for this great evil... Minax!
It was thus that Lord British sent out a call for someone to step forward and take on the darkness. He and many others believed that the fall of Minax would mean the end of her wrath, and most importantly a restoration of Earth, for all time.
Meanwhile, the Champion who slew Mondain in his Sosarian stronghold was returning home to Earth. This person would find an Earth quite different from the one that was left behind... for the latter was one that never even knew the name "Mondain"!
